Day 15

Zanzibar Safari

Breakfast and Departure from Dar es Salaam to Julius Nyerere International Airport for morning flight to Zanzibar.  Tour of the Port City of Stone Town, which has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.  Stone Town is a fine example of the Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa.  It retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many buildings that reflect its particular culture, which has brought together and homogenized disparate elements of the cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over more than a millennium.
The Stone Town tour includes lunch and a visit to the Old Slave Trade Buildings including an Anglican Cathedral that stands on the site of the public slave market, on the eastern side of Stone Town.  The church was constructed in 1877 when the slave trade was finally abolished. There is a somber monument to the memory of the enslaved Africans who passed through the islands' markets.  The life-like stone statues of male and female slaves, attached with iron shackles and chains, stands in a pit symbolizing their inhumane incarceration and also the depth of their despair.  Beneath the nearby St. Monica's Hostel are underground chambers that were used as holding cells for the captured Africans, a terrible reminder of the dark side of humanity. Dinner at hotel and Overnight in Zanzibar.
